In 1997, Sharma designed a portal called Indiasite.net and started doing small projects related to content management for various media houses. In 1999, Lotus Interworks bought Indiasite.net for US$ 1 million.

Sharma then founded ‘One97 Communication Limited’ (One97) in 2001 in Noida, a city in the northern part of India.
